The Laura Ingalls Wilder Country Cookbook
Published in Hardcover by Harpercollins Juvenile Books (September, 1995)
Authors: Laura Ingalls Wilder, Leslie A. Kelly, and William T. Anderson
Average review score:

Lovely Book
I, too, checked this out of the library and tried the gingerbread recipe. Made it for the second time today for a family dinner and everyone raved about it. It is a lovely book full of comments about each recipe and wonderful illustrations. My 9 year old loved looking at it too. Can't wait to try more recipes...a good variety with old-fashioned sensibility.

Disappointed to find this is out of print!
I checked this book out of my local library and enjoyed it so much (Laura's gingerbread recipe is especially good) that I wanted to purchase a copy for my personal cookbook collection. I hope it is reprinted soon! Different from "The Little House Cookbook" in that these are not necessarily recipes from Laura's "Little House" books, but rather recipes from her personal cookbook she complied as an adult living in Mansfield, MO. This book is illustrated with beautiful color photos of Laura and Almanzo's home in Missouri (inside and out) and would be a great addition to my cookbook collection. The recipes themselves have a simple, country flair and appear to be easy to prepare (only tried a few but I do love to read cookbooks!)

Learning by Heart: Contemporary American Poetry about School
Published in Hardcover by University of Iowa Press (April, 1999)
Authors: Maggie Anderson, David Hassler, and Robert Cole
Average review score:

School.
School continues to be one of the most traumatizing/wonderful experiences of my life. This book talks about school from all angles .. highly recommended.

A must-read for everyone who's ever been to school
This collection includes some of the best poems of our time--all related to school. The pain and poignancy of school-age experiences in the classroom, on the playground, or on the athletic field, are captured in this volume with the resonance of shared life. The names of teachers--Mrs. Krikorian, Mrs. Smythe, and the rest--bring back our own teachers' faces and even their "sausage arms." Teachers themselves speak here as well, with humor, sadness, or a sense of loss about the classrooms of children they have known. This volume, with work by our best contemporary poets, is a must-read for anyone who teaches or learns or who has ever been in school.

Lebensohl Convention Complete in Complete in Contract Bridge
Published in Paperback by Baron/Barclay Bridge Supplies (June, 1987)
Author: Ron Anderson
Average review score:

cleared it up
I always found Lebensohl to be very confusing, and my partner and I would always be on different wavelengths when opponents opened a weak 2 or overcalled our 1NT. After reading this book, I find it difficult to believe that Lebensohl was once the source of many bottom scores for me. The book made Lebensohl crystal clear to me, and now its one of the most indispensible conventions on my list.

Best Book Ever on Any Specific Bridge Convention
Not only does this book describe the mechanism of the Lebensohl convention, it explains why you should want to use it. With expert (and even not-so-expert) opponents interfering over one no-trump openings nowadays, being able to counter them is necessary for modern tournament partnerships, even at lower levels of competition. It is also a useful tool for established partnerships at rubber bridge, even if your opponents only overcall your no-trump openers rarely and with solid values. The late bridge expert Ron Anderson describes how this convention permits you to determine whether or not your partnership has a stopper in their suit, whether you have a 4-4 major suit fit and also to distinguish between hands that are game-going or just competing for a part score. Do your bidding agreements do this?

After establishing the use of Lebensohl to counter opponents' interference over one no-trump openings, Ron Anderson goes on to discuss its extension to responding to a takeout double after the opponents have opened a weak two bid. Although not strictly part of Lebensohl, Anderson includes an excellent discussion of bidding structures after your partner overcalls an opponent's weak two bid with two no-trump. He then completes the book by discussing some of the more experimental frontiers of Lebensohl being explored by more adventurous experts. Your partnership can learn and apply as many or as few of these techniques as you want, but you can be sure that Anderson will teach them well.

The individual chapters are:

Chapter 1 When the Opponents Enter Your Notrump Auction Chapter 2 Lebensohl After Natural Overcalls Chapter 3 Game Invitational Hands Chapter 4 Lebensohl After Natural Three-Level Overcalls Chapter 5 Lebensohl Revisited Chapter 6 Lebensohl After Artificial Overcalls Chapter 7 Lebensohl Innovations Chapter 8 Responding to a Double of a Weak Two Bid Chapter 9 Responding to Two Notrump Overcalls Chapter 10 Responding to a Reverse Chapter 11 The Latest Word in Lebensohl There are several quizzes (with answers) to reinforce the material.

I have only two warnings. First, chapter 7 and the last two chapters seem (IMHO) to contain the more outré extensions to Lebensohl and should be carefully evaluated before adoption. Second, Chapter 6 on "Lebensohl After Artificial Overcalls" does not discuss the more recent artificial overcalls, such as Cappelletti and DONT, but it does suggest general principles that can be applied to all artificial overcalls.

This book is a model of how bridge conventions should be explained. Buy two, your partner shouldn't have to borrow yours!

The Legend of the Wandering Jew
Published in Paperback by University Press of New England (August, 1991)
Author: George Kumler Anderson
Average review score:

THE book about the BOOKS on the Wandering Jew and Jewess
I am the living World expert today, fulfilling Doctor Anderson's mission to bring the legend of these extra-scriptural international legendary characters up-to-date. Funded by twenty years of Guggenheim Fellowships, this book will remain the definitive personal view-point of 2,000 years of oral and written tradition in prose, poetry, and examples of pictoral art, music, and film. My twenty years of literary property development is solely due to his thorough and thoughtful book (I self-publish screenplays on ISBN 1-895507-).

Excellent for research
My Masters thesis was on the symbolism of the Old Man in Chaucer's "Pardoner's Tale" and this particular book contributed a great deal in my understanding of the legend of the Wandering Jew. It is completely thorough and wonderfully written.

Linnea's Windowsill Garden
Published in Hardcover by R & S Books (October, 1988)
Authors: Christina Bjork, Lena Anderson, and Joan Sandin
Average review score:

Gardening fun with Linnea!
Linnea enjoyed Monet's garden so much, she decides to plant her own garden....inside... because she doesn't have land to garden outside! Linnea shows the reader her garden and then explains how the young reader can do the same thing. Linnea demonstrates everything the young gardener needs to know about growing a healthy, indoor garden. This book is a bequiling method of enticing children to develop a green thumb. Linnea is always fun and delightful!

This is the best kid's gardening book!
This is a book about a girl named Linnea, the book is kind of like Linnea's garden journal because she is telling the reader what she did that day in her garden while explaining how you can plant those things too. It explains how to plant beans, avocado plants and lots more, It also tells you how to get rid of bugs, and it shows you different kinds of common bugs in gardens. This book really shows you that you don't need to have a big backyard to grow lots of plants. I really recomend this book

Love Is
Published in School & Library Binding by Simon & Schuster (Juv) (January, 2001)
Author: Wendy Anderson Halperin
Average review score:

Beautiful book
This is a lovely book with amazing depth. My three year old daughter finds something new in the illustrations on every reading, as do I. The book will grow with her as many of the illustrations make sense to a three year old in one way and an older child in another way.

Beautiful!
This is a book you and/or your children could spend hours pouring over. The intricate, detailed pictures show each of the descriptions of love. On the left page, there will be a picture of, for example, a person being resentful. On the opposite page, the same person in the same situation is acting in love. An outstanding reminder to all of us!!!

Low Back Pain: An Evidence-Based, Biopsychosocial Model for Clinical Management

Authors: Jane Derebery and John R. Anderson
Average review score:

Comprehensive Review!
This brand new 2002 book is a great comprehensive review of low back pain! Because it is written by an MD and a DO, it does a great job of explaining thoroughly all the approaches that can be taken for back pain. It is well written and easy to understand. I recommend this book for clinicians and also for anyone who has ever experience low back pain. I bought the one from the 'used' section and it was brand new! Great book - a definite must buy!

LOW BACK PAIN PAPERBACK 2002 Edition By: Jane Derebery MD
IN SUMMARY:
An excellent handbook to improve quality of living in-patients with low back pain and evidence based psychosocial approach.

MY REVIEW:
The book is published by OEM Press. This book has contributions from many physicians, including the two authors Jane Derebery, MD and John R. Anderson, DO. Excellent book, comprehensive, short easy to read and understand. The book has 363 pages and 19 chapters contributed by various authors and experienced physicians.

The book is a convergence of three factors. (1) Near epidemic proportions of low back problems in United States, (2) the recent emergence of clinical guidelines for managing low back pain based on available scientific studies, and (3) our awareness of the slow "trickle down" of new evidence-based information, derived from controlled scientific studies, into routine clinical practice.

Etiology of low back pain is explained well not only including bio-mechanical problem involving bones, nerves and muscles, but also bio-psychosocial model including patients personal life, work psychological factors of depression, fell, somatization, and etc.

The book is written in simple language, easy to understand and talks about treatment of body and soul and holistic available treatment. The book also specifies non-discogenic and discongenic low back-pain various new imaging techniques and described including MRI, labs, and medical treatment. Physical therapy, chiropractic treatment and surgery are described to educate patient employer and physicians. There is sample evidence described for early implementation exercise within an active physical therapy rehabilitation problem and case management model.

I congratualate the both Dr. Derebery and Dr. Anderson for an excellent Project on this subject. Overall I rate this book EXCELLENT with 5 Gold Stars! (From Vimal V. Abhyanker, MD, email address: vimalabhyankermd@hotmail.com)

The Man With the Bird on His Head: The Amazing Fulfillment of a Mysterious Island Prophecy (International Adventure Series)
Published in Paperback by Y W A M Pub (January, 1999)
Authors: John Rush, Abbe Anderson, Loren Cunningham, and Don Richardson
Average review score:

Wonderful Book!
John Rush gives us a present day triumph of faith. The book is masterfully written in a personal down to earth style. The author takes you from the California gold country, to the most remote location on earth to a little island in vanuatu which is home to an an amazing tribe of people. He tells the true story of a young man's struggle to come to grips with the reality of God, and the blessings that come from obedience to God.

An amazing journey across the globe and through faith.
Mr. Rush presents us with a thrilling account of faith and a journey to an isolated island. The book is a masterpiece, detailing an early life as an atheist to a switch to a missionary to the islands around Vanuatu. Everything from being made a temporary pastor to avoiding drive-by shootings. This book proves that God is active in the world today, and deeply cares for those unreached people in the world. A true-life account of a missionary, and a wonderful example of God's work in our world.

Marian Anderson: A Great Singer (Great African Americans Series)
Published in Library Binding by Enslow Publishers, Inc. (April, 1991)
Authors: Patricia C. McKissack and Fredrick L. McKissack
Average review score:

Great book on Marian Anderson
This is a terrific book. It combines moderately large type with clear writing and lots of well-chosen photographs in telling the life story of Marian Anderson. Complex ideas such as segregation are conveyed in a direct and understandable manner.
I believe this is a better book than _When Marian Sang_, which has beautiful artwork, but has an inadequate text -- at the same time being too complex and too narrow.
This revised version of _Marian Anderson: A Great Singer_ would be appropriate for elementary students, and for anyone who would like a quick and thorough review of Ms. Anderson's life, together with over twenty well-chosen photographs, and a timeline, vocabulary, and list of additional resources.

Marian Anderson a Great Singer
This is a well written biography with great photographs. The story follows Marian's life from childhood through her retirement in 1965. The writers gently lead us through the injustices and triumphs Marian encountered during her life and career as one of our nations great musical treasures.

The reading level is appropriate for grades 2 through 5. A timeline, glossary, and references for more information are also included. The internet addresses include some wonderful samples of Marian's singing.

I can't wait to share this story with my kindergarten through fifth grade music classes. I know they will positively love it!

Marriage, Just a Piece of Paper?
Published in Hardcover by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (February, 2002)
Authors: Katherine Anderson, Don Browning, and Brian Boyer
Average review score:

Portraits of marriage
On Valentines Day 2002 the PBS in America featured a one-hour documentary examining the status of marriage and family. This is the companion volume to that film, featuring leading marriage and family experts along with the stories, testimonials and recollections of many ordinary Americans. Taken together it provides a fascinating and incisive portrait of the related issues of marriage, divorce, parenting and family in contemporary American life.

The book features a number of perspectives, including those who argue for gay marriage and easy divorce. But probably a majority of contributors recognise (academically or experientially) that marriage and family are troubled institutions today, and they are in need of help and support.

Many of the articles are quite good, from a pro-marriage and pro-family point of view. A number of experts more or less supporting such a view are featured, including David Blankenhorn, Wade Horn, Judith Wallerstein, David Popenoe, Linda Waite and William Galston.

Many of their insights alone are worth the price of the book. For example, Wade Horn's article on fatherhood is an important contribution, given all the problems we have in this area: "..."

And the well-documented evidence is quite clear: children are hurt by father absence. Indeed, children are hurt by divorce. And the hurt goes on for decades. Judith Wallerstein, who has studied children for three decades after their parent's divorce knows this all too well:

"..."

And marriage is what best protects children. As David Popenoe reminds us, "..."

David Blankenhorn reminds us that marriage is more than just a private relationship. It is also a public institution. Marriage effects not just the couple, but the in-laws, children, and society as a whole. And marriage has even more far-reaching importance:

"..."

And it is not just the conservatives who make such claims. Democratic Senator Joseph Lieberman from Connecticut, for example, is also aware of these truths: "..."

In addition to the experts, many of the testimonies from ordinary Americans also strongly make the case for marriage and the natural family. Some of the heartbreaking tales of the impact of divorce on children for example are worth recounting. One mother offers this perspective on how her four kids responded to their parents' divorce:

"..."

Other stories could be recounted. But as this book makes clear, marriage is still very important for the overwhelming majority of Americans. And the institution of marriage is being severely tested these days. This collection of articles, stories and essays shows that marriage is more than just a piece of paper.

Engaging Accounts of the State of Marriage in America
This engaging read is a collection of complete transcripts of experts and "real people" interviewed for the PBS national broadcast of the same name. The program was seen in most markets on Valentine's Day 2002. There is a "Marriage--Just a Piece of Paper?" video that readers may want to seek out. The video video, narrated by television journalist Cokie Roberts, contains an extra half-hour of footage and should be required viewing in every church group, marriage preparation course, and high-school or university course on marriage and relationships in this country. The experts include a range of professionals--from academics, to judges, to therapists, to ministers, to United States senators from both political parties. The interviews with these experts along with those of men, women, and children and their "real life" experiences of family life today are all collected here. One particularly poignant interview with a dad in the process of divorcing, along with other accounts of fatherhood in the book, really opens the eyes to the important of fathers for families of and of families for fathers. Two of the Gen X women interviewed (and there are many Gen Xrs talking about the realities of dating, single life, and marriage today)--one a single mother and the other twice-divorced and dating--speak of their experiences with such humor and candor (and with such personalities in the accompanying video!) that they could be destined for sitcom stardom if they ever make it out to Hollywood. Read it straight through or interview by interview--but definitely read it and seek out the accompanying video if you want to understand the state of marriage and family today.
